The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Progesterone (micronized)
Progesterone is a bioidentical female sex hormone. Oral micronized progesterone (such as Prometrium) is FDA-approved for the prevention of endometrial hyperplasia in nonhysterectomized postmenopausal women receiving estrogen therapy, and for the treatment of secondary amenorrhea. In menopausal hormone therapy, progesterone is prescribed alongside estrogen for women who still have a uterus to protect the uterine lining from overgrowth. Therapy is individualized by your provider.

Side effects
Most common: drowsiness (often desirable when taken at night), dizziness, breast tenderness, headache, bloating, mood changes, and breakthrough bleeding. Less common but serious: blood clots, gallbladder disease, and (in combined hormone therapy) a small increased risk of breast cancer with long-term use.
Avoid When
Active or history of breast cancer; history of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack; active liver disease; undiagnosed vaginal bleeding; known or suspected pregnancy (unless prescribed in pregnancy); known hypersensitivity (including peanut allergy for certain formulations containing peanut oil).
