The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Benzoyl peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective and well-studied topical acne treatments available. It works by releasing oxygen into the pore, which kills acne-causing bacteria, and by helping to clear out the dead skin cells and excess oil that lead to clogged pores. Unlike antibiotics, bacteria do not develop resistance to benzoyl peroxide, which is why it is often combined with topical antibiotics such as clindamycin. It is most effective for inflammatory acne (red, pus-filled pimples). To minimize irritation, start with a lower strength (2.5%) and apply every other day before building up.

Side effects
Most common: dryness, peeling, redness, and a feeling of warmth or mild stinging. Less common: contact dermatitis or true allergic reaction (rash beyond the application area, swelling). Increased sun sensitivity is mild but present — daily sunscreen is recommended.
Avoid When
Known hypersensitivity to benzoyl peroxide; eczematous, broken, or sunburned skin; very sensitive skin (start with low strength). Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Note: benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabrics — use white towels and pillowcases.
