The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Estradiol (17β-estradiol)
Estradiol is a bioidentical form of estrogen. Specific FDA-approved formulations are indicated for treating moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms of menopause, moderate-to-severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause, hypoestrogenism, and for preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis. Estradiol is available as oral tablets, transdermal patches, topical gels and sprays, vaginal creams and rings, and other forms. Women who still have a uterus must also take a progestogen to protect the uterine lining from overgrowth. Therapy is individualized based on symptoms, age, time since menopause, and personal risk factors.

Side effects
Most common: breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, headache, mood changes, and breakthrough bleeding (especially in the first few months). Less common but serious: blood clots in the legs or lungs, stroke, heart attack, gallbladder disease, and an increased risk of breast cancer with long-term combined therapy. Risks depend heavily on route, dose, age, and individual factors.
Avoid When
Personal history of breast cancer or other estrogen-sensitive cancers; history of blood clots (DVT, PE, stroke, heart attack); active liver disease; unexplained vaginal bleeding; known or suspected pregnancy; known hypersensitivity. Use caution with high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, migraine with aura, and smoking (which increases clot risk).
