The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Estradiol (17β-estradiol)
The estradiol patch delivers bioidentical estradiol through the skin at a steady rate. Specific FDA-approved patches are indicated for moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms of menopause, moderate-to-severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, hypoestrogenism, and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Because the transdermal route bypasses first-pass liver metabolism, it may carry a lower risk of blood clots than oral estrogen for some patients. Patches are applied to clean, dry skin below the waist and replaced once or twice weekly depending on the product. Women who still have a uterus must also take a progestogen to protect the uterine lining. Therapy is individualized based on symptoms, age, time since menopause, and personal risk factors.

Side effects
Most common: application-site redness or itching, breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, headache, mood changes, and breakthrough bleeding (especially in the first few months). Less common but serious: blood clots in the legs or lungs, stroke, heart attack, gallbladder disease, and an increased risk of breast cancer with long-term combined therapy. Risks depend heavily on route, dose, age, and individual factors.
Avoid When
Personal history of breast cancer or other estrogen-sensitive cancers; history of blood clots (DVT, PE, stroke, heart attack); active liver disease; unexplained vaginal bleeding; known or suspected pregnancy; known hypersensitivity. Use caution with high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, migraine with aura, and smoking (which increases clot risk). Rotate application sites to reduce skin irritation.
