The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Fluoxetine hydrochloride
Fluoxetine (brand name Prozac) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD); in combination with olanzapine, it is also approved for treatment-resistant depression and bipolar I depression. It works by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain. Fluoxetine has one of the longest half-lives among SSRIs, which makes it more forgiving of missed doses but slower to clear when stopped. Most patients begin to feel benefit at 2–6 weeks, with full effect at 8–12 weeks.

Side effects
Most common: nausea, diarrhea, headache, insomnia or drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, and sexual side effects. Less common but serious: serotonin syndrome, increased suicidal thoughts in young adults, hyponatremia, increased bleeding risk, and discontinuation symptoms if stopped abruptly.
Avoid When
Concurrent use of MAO inhibitors (within 14 days), pimozide, or disulfiram (for oral concentrate); known hypersensitivity. Use caution with bipolar disorder (risk of mania), seizure history, liver disease, bleeding disorders or anticoagulants, and other serotonergic medications (risk of serotonin syndrome). Discuss with your provider if pregnant or breastfeeding.
