The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Hydroquinone, Kojic acid, Tretinoin
This compounded topical combines hydroquinone, kojic acid, and tretinoin. It is prepared by a state-licensed compounding pharmacy under a prescription and is not FDA-approved as a combination product. Hydroquinone and kojic acid both inhibit tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in melanin production). Tretinoin is a prescription topical retinoid that affects skin cell turnover. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential while using this medication. Whether this preparation is appropriate, the strengths, and the duration of use are determined by your Mochi provider.

Side effects
Most common: dryness, redness, peeling, stinging, and increased sun sensitivity, especially in the first few weeks. Less common: contact dermatitis, paradoxical darkening, and with long-term hydroquinone use, exogenous ochronosis (a bluish-gray skin discoloration). Always use daily sunscreen.
Avoid When
Pregnancy or breastfeeding (especially due to tretinoin); known hypersensitivity to any ingredient; broken, eczematous, or sunburned skin; active rosacea flare. Avoid combining with strong exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide) initially. Long-term continuous use of hydroquinone (especially at higher strengths) is not recommended due to risk of ochronosis.
