Active Ingredient:
Tirzepatide
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable medication containing tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is FDA-approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Tirzepatide enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon when glucose is elevated, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. Treatment begins at a low dose and is titrated upward gradually to help your body adjust and reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Side effects
Most common: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, decreased appetite, fatigue, and injection-site reactions. Less common but serious: pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, acute kidney injury from dehydration, hypoglycemia (with other diabetes meds), worsening diabetic retinopathy, and rare severe allergic reactions.
Avoid When
Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; history of pancreatitis; severe gastroparesis or other significant GI disease; pregnancy or breastfeeding; known hypersensitivity. Use caution with insulin or sulfonylureas (hypoglycemia), gallbladder disease, kidney disease, or diabetic retinopathy.
