The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Ondansetron
Ondansetron (brand name Zofran) is a serotonin (5-HT3) receptor antagonist. It is FDA-approved to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy (including highly and moderately emetogenic regimens), radiation therapy, and postoperative recovery. Available as a standard tablet, an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT), and an oral solution, ondansetron typically begins to work within 30–60 minutes. Unlike many other anti-nausea drugs, it does not cause sedation.

Side effects
Most common: headache, constipation, fatigue, dizziness, and mild drowsiness. Less common but important: QT prolongation (an abnormal heart rhythm), especially at higher doses or with other QT-prolonging medications. Rare: serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs, and rare allergic reactions.
Avoid When
Known hypersensitivity to ondansetron or other 5-HT3 antagonists; concurrent use of apomorphine; congenital long QT syndrome. Use caution with other medications that prolong the QT interval, electrolyte abnormalities (especially low potassium or magnesium), and significant liver disease. Discuss with your provider if pregnant.
