The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Sertraline hydrochloride
Sertraline (brand name Zoloft) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. It is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Sertraline increases serotonin availability in the brain, which over weeks improves mood, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. Most patients begin to notice benefit within 2–6 weeks and reach full effect at 8–12 weeks. Sertraline should not be stopped abruptly — taper under your provider's guidance.

Side effects
Most common: nausea, diarrhea, headache, insomnia or drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, and sexual side effects. Less common but serious: serotonin syndrome, increased suicidal thoughts in young adults, hyponatremia, increased bleeding risk, and discontinuation symptoms if stopped abruptly.
Avoid When
Concurrent use of MAO inhibitors (within 14 days), pimozide, or disulfiram (for oral concentrate); known hypersensitivity. Use caution with bipolar disorder (risk of mania), seizure history, liver disease, bleeding disorders or anticoagulants, and other serotonergic medications (risk of serotonin syndrome). Discuss with your provider if pregnant or breastfeeding.
