The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Semaglutide
Wegovy is a once-weekly injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural gut hormone to reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying. It is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbid condition, and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke) in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. Dosing is titrated gradually upward over several months to minimize gastrointestinal side effects and reach the therapeutic dose.

Side effects
Most common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, headache, fatigue, injection-site reactions. Less common but serious: pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney injury, hypoglycemia (with other diabetes meds), diabetic retinopathy progression, and rare allergic reactions.
Avoid When
Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; history of pancreatitis; severe GI disease including gastroparesis; pregnancy or breastfeeding; known hypersensitivity. Caution with insulin/sulfonylureas, gallbladder disease, diabetic retinopathy, and significant kidney disease.
