Know Before You Go: Letter of Medical Necessity

If you’re planning to take your medication on domestic public transportation or are traveling overseas, you may need a letter of medical necessity from your Mochi Health provider.

If you’re traveling abroad, you’ll likely need to present a letter of medical necessity. Each country has varying laws and regulations for transporting and accessing medications across borders. Avoid penalties by notifying our clinical support team of your travel plans.

While policies for bringing medication on domestic transportation depend on the service, it’s better to be prepared. If you’re bringing your injection, having the appropriate documentation handy can be helpful in the case that the presence of a sharp object raises security questions.

‍To obtain a letter of medical necessity, submit a request to the Care Team in your Mochi Health Patient Portal.  Include the subject line Travel Letter Request.

‍Work with your provider to ensure you have enough medication for your trip. Some insurance plans will not cover more than 30 days of doses.  If you will be away for longer than a month, our team can guide you through your options for getting access to refills.

What To Expect During Travel When Carrying Medication

All medications must be in their original, labeled containers in your carry-on luggage. 

In certain states, compounded medications from our partner Aequita Pharmacy come packaged in a TSA-approved insulated canister that keeps your medication at a safe temperature while you’re on the go.
