Mochi Health vs. Hims: At-a-Glance

Unlike many telehealth programs that rely on automated check-ins or limited messaging, Mochi Health provides transparent, flat monthly pricing and 1-on-1 video visits with licensed medical providers and registered dietitians. Each membership includes personalized medical care, medication management, and continuous support.

Mochi also offers Covered with Mochi, a way to get comprehensive GLP-1 weight care using the commercial insurance you already pay for. You get a board-certified doctor and a registered dietitian, doctor visits are billed in-network for your plan’s copay, and registered dietitian visits are always $0. Membership is $17 a month, billed annually, plus your plan’s cost sharing. Check your eligibility

By contrast, Hims relies heavily on an asynchronous model in many states, where most interactions occur through online questionnaires and message threads; video visits are required only in some states. Hims’ GLP-1 access and certain offerings are not available in all 50 states. Hims does not bill insurance for its membership or its care, and states on its own site that insurance is not required. Mochi’s model prioritizes consistent, relationship-based care designed for long-term success.

What are the differences between Mochi and Hims?

Both companies may prescribe GLP-1s like semaglutide and offer delivery. However, there are notable differences in clinical oversight, frequency of live care, pricing transparency, and plan flexibility.

  • Care model and oversight: Hims is designed around asynchronous intake and messaging; a licensed provider reviews submissions and, if appropriate, prescribes medication, with live video generally limited to states that require it. Mochi schedules live video visits with a physician or nurse practitioner and provides ongoing support from registered dietitians for nutrition, lifestyle, and dose adjustments.

  • Availability: Hims’ weight-loss program is not available in all 50 states. Mochi’s access extends to all 50 states; confirm your state during intake.

  • Pricing and commitments: Mochi is transparent and pay-as-you-go, and the first month is free for new members: after that, a $79 monthly membership covers visits, messaging, and care coordination. Compounded GLP-1 options start at $60/month (semaglutide) or $90/month (tirzepatide), shipping included. Hims charges a separate Weight Loss Membership of $39 for the first month and $149/month after that, which Hims states does not include or guarantee a prescription. Medication is billed on top, from $149/month for oral options up to $1,899/month for Mounjaro® and Zepbound®.

  • Insurance structure: This is the largest difference between the two programs. With Covered with Mochi, your doctor visits are billed to your commercial insurance in-network, the same way any doctor’s appointment is billed, and registered dietitian visits are $0. Hims bills no insurance at all. Its own site says insurance is not required, and its FAQ confirms that while the medication fee is FSA/HSA eligible, the membership fee is not. At Hims, none of what you pay for care can be routed through a health benefit.

  • Patient autonomy: Mochi uses shared decision-making: you and your provider consider the full range of clinically appropriate GLP-1 paths (including compounded options when appropriate) and adjust over time. Hims typically places patients into an oral-kit path or an injectable GLP-1 path within a predefined framework.

Bottom line: Mochi is built for hands-on clinical care and pricing flexibility, including an in-network option; Hims favors asynchronous intake and a recurring cash membership on top of medication costs, with fewer routine live visits.

Can you use your insurance for GLP-1 weight care with Mochi or Hims?

No, at Hims. Yes, with Covered with Mochi.

Mochi. Covered with Mochi is a membership that bills your doctor visits to your commercial insurance, in-network, like any other doctor’s appointment. You pay your plan’s copay, which is typically $0 to $30, and you see your estimate before you book. Registered dietitian visits are $0. The membership is $17 a month billed annually, or $199 a year, plus your plan’s cost sharing. The membership covers platform and care-team access; your visits are billed to your plan separately. Checking your coverage takes about a minute, and Mochi works with 1,000+ insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Anthem and UnitedHealthcare.

Hims. Hims does not bill insurance, for the membership or for care. Its site frames this as a simplification, saying insurance is not required so there are no complicated insurance questions. The practical effect is that the full $149 monthly membership is cash out of pocket, and Hims confirms it is not FSA/HSA eligible either, so it cannot be reimbursed through a health account the way the medication fee can.

Is Mochi or Hims easier to sign up for?

Mochi is optimized for speed and clinical clarity. After a concise form, eligible individuals proceed quickly to membership and book a first video visit with a licensed provider. The provider completes the assessment live and determines an appropriate plan during the visit—minimizing delays and paperwork. If you are using Covered with Mochi, the coverage check takes about a minute and shows your copay estimate before you book.

Hims uses an asynchronous, form-heavy process. Because there is typically no live visit at the outset, the platform collects extensive medical and lifestyle information up front. A provider reviews the intake offline, which can lengthen time to decision and limit opportunities for immediate clarification. In some states, a video visit is required after intake; otherwise, the experience remains asynchronous.

Patient autonomy and plan choice

  • Mochi: Shared decision-making with a provider on the specific GLP-1 path (including compounded options when appropriate), with room to adjust over time.

  • Hims: An oral-kit path or an injectable GLP-1 path; patient choice is generally within that framework rather than selecting a detailed plan themselves.

Mochi vs. Hims: Which is right for you?

Choose Mochi if you want:

  • Unlimited live video visits and hands-on clinical guidance

  • Transparent, month-to-month pricing without long-term lock-ins

  • The option to bill your doctor visits to your commercial insurance in-network, with $0 registered dietitian visits, through Covered with Mochi

  • Structured follow-ups, side-effect management, and sustainable habits

  • Treatment options for teens with access to pediatric specialists

Choose Hims if you prefer:

  • A general men’s telehealth platform with a weight-loss option

  • A cash-pay model with no insurance involved

  • Primarily asynchronous care with limited live guidance

Mochi Health vs. Hims FAQs

Are Mochi Health weight-loss programs covered by insurance? What about Hims?

Coverage depends on plan and medical history. With Covered with Mochi, your doctor visits are billed to your commercial insurance in-network for your plan’s copay, and registered dietitian visits are $0. Mochi also accepts insurance for FDA-approved GLP-1s and handles the prior authorization paperwork; providers can prescribe to pharmacies where patients may apply manufacturer savings programs if available. Hims does not bill insurance and states that insurance is not required. Its medication fee is FSA/HSA eligible, but Hims states its membership fee is not.

What is Covered with Mochi?

Covered with Mochi is a membership that lets you use the commercial insurance you already pay for toward comprehensive GLP-1 weight care. For $17 a month billed annually, or $199 a year, plus your plan’s cost sharing, you get access to a board-certified doctor and a registered dietitian. Doctor visits are billed in-network for your plan’s copay, copays are typically $0 to $30 and shown before you book, and registered dietitian visits are always $0. Mochi works with 1,000+ insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Anthem and UnitedHealthcare. Commercial insurance only. Medication is billed separately. Hims does not offer an equivalent.

Does Hims offer anything like Covered with Mochi?

No. Hims bills no insurance for its membership or its care, and says on its own site that insurance is not required. It also states that while the medication fee is FSA/HSA eligible, the membership fee is not, so the full $149 monthly care fee is out of pocket with no benefit pathway.

Do Mochi and Hims operate in all states?

Both operate broadly in the U.S., with state-by-state differences and changing pharmacy supply. Hims notes that its weight-loss program is not available in all 50 states; confirm availability during intake.

How can you switch from Hims to Mochi?

In the eligibility form, indicate whether weight-loss medication has been used in the last six months. If documentation of the last prescription and dose is available, the care team can transition the plan seamlessly. A Mochi provider will continue appropriate therapy, adjust dosing if needed, and schedule follow-ups to avoid gaps in care. You can also run the Covered with Mochi coverage check during signup to see whether your visits can be billed in-network.

Do Mochi and Hims prescribe GLP-1 medications?

Both work with licensed providers who may prescribe GLP-1 medications when clinically appropriate. Mochi’s care model emphasizes safe titration, active monitoring, and clear guidance on pharmacy and coverage pathways to keep therapy sustainable. Learn more about medication options on the Medications page.
