The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Bupropion hydrochloride
Bupropion is an atypical antidepressant that increases norepinephrine and dopamine activity in the brain (rather than serotonin like SSRIs). It is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and (as Zyban) smoking cessation. In combination with naltrexone in the FDA-approved product Contrave, bupropion is also approved for chronic weight management. Bupropion is typically taken earlier in the day to minimize the chance of insomnia.

Side effects
Most common: dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, agitation, increased heart rate, sweating, and decreased appetite. Less common but important: increased blood pressure, anxiety or jitteriness, and — rarely — seizures (dose-dependent risk). Also: increased suicidal thoughts in young adults and rare allergic skin reactions.
Avoid When
History of seizure disorder; current or prior eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia); abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives; concurrent MAO inhibitors; known hypersensitivity. Use caution with hypertension, bipolar disorder, recent head injury, or kidney/liver disease.
