The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Minoxidil
Oral minoxidil is a vasodilator originally FDA-approved for severe hypertension. At low doses it is prescribed off-label for androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss. It is thought to work by prolonging the growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle and improving blood flow to hair follicles — acting systemically rather than locally like the topical form.

Side effects
Most common: lightheadedness, swelling in the ankles or face, increased heart rate or palpitations, unwanted hair growth (hypertrichosis) on the face or body, and headache. Less common but serious: fluid retention and rare pericardial effects.
Avoid When
Known hypersensitivity to minoxidil; pregnancy or breastfeeding; pheochromocytoma. Use caution with low blood pressure, significant heart disease, fluid retention, kidney disease, or a history of pericardial effusion.
