The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Clindamycin phosphate
Clindamycin phosphate is a topical antibiotic used to treat inflammatory acne. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, reducing the population of Cutibacterium acnes on the skin and calming the immune response that drives red, swollen pimples. To prevent bacterial resistance, clindamycin is almost always paired with benzoyl peroxide and/or a topical retinoid rather than used as monotherapy. It is generally well tolerated, even on sensitive skin, and is suitable for the face, chest, and back. Improvement is typically visible within 4–8 weeks.

Side effects
Most common: dryness, mild peeling, burning, itching, or oily skin. Uncommon: contact dermatitis. Rare but serious: severe diarrhea or abdominal pain (which could indicate C. difficile colitis even from topical absorption) — stop the medication and contact your provider.
Avoid When
Known hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin; history of inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated colitis. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Use only as long as needed and pair with benzoyl peroxide to prevent resistance.
