Clomiphene citrate
Clomiphene citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary, increasing the release of FSH and LH. It is FDA-approved to induce ovulation in women with ovulatory dysfunction who are trying to conceive, and is typically taken as a short course of tablets within the menstrual cycle. Low-dose clomiphene is also prescribed off-label for male secondary hypogonadism to stimulate the body’s own testosterone production. Whether clomiphene is appropriate for you, the dose, the schedule, and any required lab monitoring are determined by your Mochi provider.
Side effects
Most common: hot flashes, mood changes, breast tenderness, bloating or abdominal discomfort, nausea, and headache. Less common but important: visual disturbances such as blurring or flashing (any new vision change warrants stopping the medication and seeing a provider), ovarian enlargement, and — in fertility use — an increased chance of multiple pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation.
Avoid When
Pregnancy (do not take once pregnant); liver disease; abnormal uterine bleeding of undetermined cause; ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to polycystic ovary syndrome; uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal dysfunction; pituitary tumor; known hypersensitivity. Use caution with a history of visual disturbances, and with hormone-sensitive cancers.
