The treatment
Understanding the treatment
Active Ingredient:
Semaglutide
The Wegovy pill is the oral form of semaglutide and is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbid condition. It works by mimicking a natural gut hormone that reduces appetite and slows stomach emptying. The pill must be taken once daily on an empty stomach, with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, and you must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications. Dose is titrated gradually upward to improve tolerability.

Side effects
Most common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and fatigue. Less common but serious: pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney injury from dehydration, hypoglycemia (with other diabetes meds), and diabetic retinopathy progression.
Avoid When
Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; history of pancreatitis; severe GI disease; pregnancy or breastfeeding; known hypersensitivity. Use caution with insulin/sulfonylureas (hypoglycemia), gallbladder disease, diabetic retinopathy, and reduced kidney function.
